1-Methylsulfinyl-ethane is a molecule that contains a sulfinyl group and an ethane group. It can be synthesized from the reaction of methanesulfinic acid with ethylene oxide. 1-Methylsulfinyl-ethane has been shown to have metal chelate activity, which occurs when the metal ion is attracted to the electron-rich sulfur atom. The enzyme activities of 1-methylsulfinyl-ethane have been studied using molecular modeling techniques. This molecule also can be used as a cationic polymerization agent, because it contains a hydroxyl group.
