Product Information
Melamine is a chemical compound that can be found in many different types of products. It is used as a flame retardant, plasticizer, and in the production of polyurethane foam. Melamine is also used for its nitrogen content to produce melamine-formaldehyde resin and melamine-urea resins. The 15N3 isotope has been added to melamine molecules to allow for the determination of melamine concentrations in urine and tissue samples by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The addition of this isotope allows for the distinction between natural and synthetic sources of melamine. This method is a quantitative technique that uses an acidic mobile phase with a linear calibration curve. The matrix effect can be corrected by using hydrochloric acid as a volatile ionization reagent. The detection limit for this technique is 0.1 µg/mL. Chemical ionization is employed with mass spectrometric detection, which can distinguish between natural
