4-Methylbenzyl triphenylphosphonium chloride is a model system that can be used to study the stability of organic compounds. It has been stabilised by extrusion and wittig reactions. The compound is an isomeric mixture of two possible 4-methylbenzyl triphenylphosphonium chlorides, which can be separated by nmr spectra. An aryl chloride reacts with methylmagnesium chloride in the presence of halides to form a hemiketal, which then undergoes a stepwise hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. Chlorides are removed from the molecule using 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition or photovoltaic reactions.
