(R)-Methyl 2-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoate is an ester that is synthesized by the weevil Eupomatus crenulatus. It has a strong floral odor that is attractive to other weevils and can be used as an attractant in traps. This chemical has been found to have functional properties, including being a fatty acid ester and volatiles. (R)-Methyl 2-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoate is also chiral, which means it can exist in two forms: enantiomers. The form of the chemical that is synthesized by the weevil is (S)-(+)-2-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoic acid methyl ester, which is the more active form of this compound.
