2-Methyl-5-nitroindole is an organic compound that is used as a precursor in the synthesis of other compounds. It is a benzyl acetal, which can be formed by condensation of methanol and acetaldehyde with formaldehyde. 2-Methyl-5-nitroindole can also be obtained by reaction of diethylcyanide with sodium methoxide in dimethylacetamide. The yields are about 60%. The nitro group on the indole ring can be substituted with other groups, such as methyl or ethyl.
