3-Methoxyphenylglyoxal hydrate (3MPGH) is a compound that is found in feedstock materials. It can be prepared by the reaction of glyoxal with 3-methoxybenzaldehyde chloride in the presence of phosphate buffer, and purified by crystallization from water. The product has a reversible interaction with chloride ions, which can be reversed by addition of phloridzin or biomolecular preparations. The structure of 3MPGH contains two isomers, one with an open ring and one closed ring.
The product has been shown to have some activity as a rat brain stimulant, but it was not found to have any effect on red blood cells. 3MPGH has also been synthesized and used in the setup of 4-hydroxycoumarin.
