7-Methylnonanoic acid is a fatty acid that is found in ascidians. It is an isomer of octanoic acid and can be found in blood samples from patients with outbreaks of infection caused by Gram-negative bacteria. 7-Methylnonanoic acid has been shown to act as a competitive inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme polymyxin B1, which breaks down the antibacterial agent polymyxin B. This means that 7-methylnonanoic acid may be useful in the treatment or prevention of infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli.
