(S)-1-Methyl-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid is a synthetic compound that can be produced from marine sponges. It has the ability to bind to many different types of drugs and is used as an additive in pharmaceutical preparations. This chemical can also be used as a feedstock for wastewater treatment, or as a way to remove multidrugs from wastewater. (S)-1-Methyl-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid is used in bioreactors with immobilized cells to create linear peptides, which are then cleaved by enzymes such as trypsin or chymotrypsin. The resulting fragments are analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. It can also be used in affinity chromatography, mediated by methylester or residue groups.
