Description:

Mepenzolate bromide is a drug that is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease and other bowel diseases. It inhibits the production of inflammatory substances, such as histamine and leukotrienes, which are produced by mast cells in the intestine. Mepenzolate bromide also inhibits acetylcholine esterase activity, which leads to an increase in the amount of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions. This drug has been shown to be effective in some cases of emphysema. Mepenzolate bromide can be administered intravenously or orally, with a rapid onset of action. It is not active against bacteria and therefore cannot be used for the treatment of infectious diseases. Mepenzolate bromide is metabolized by CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 enzymes and has been shown to have affinity for benzodiazepine receptors.
