The enzyme 3-mercaptotransferase catalyzes the conversion of 3-mercaptotyramine to L-DOPA, which can be converted into dopamine by dopa decarboxylase. 3-Mercaptotyramine hydrochloride exists in both free form and bound form to plasma proteins.
