Metanicotine is a cholinergic drug, which is a type of acetylcholine. The drug binds to the acetylcholine receptor and causes a change in the ion channel, which leads to an increase in the production of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Metanicotine has been shown to be effective for bowel disease and inflammatory bowel disease. The drug has been shown to reduce locomotor activity in CD-1 mice, as well as have anti-inflammatory effects that may be due to its ability to block prostaglandin synthesis through its agonist binding site. Metanicotine also has antinociceptive effects when it is given at higher dosages. This antinociception may be due to its ability to inhibit acid-induced pain by interacting with hydrogen bonds and 5-membered heteroaryl groups.
