Methacrolein is a reactive organic compound that is formed when methanol reacts with an acid. Methacrolein can be used as an oxidation catalyst to produce acids from alcohols and water. It has been shown to be more efficient than platinum, molybdenum, or zirconium oxide in this reaction. Methacrolein is also a useful reagent for analytical methods because it reacts with hydrogen peroxide to produce the highly fluorescent molecule methacryloyl peroxide. The reaction mechanism of methacrolein formation has been found to involve an intramolecular hydrogen transfer from the methyl group to the ethyl group on the carbonyl carbon atom.
