Methapyrilene hydrochloride is a quinazolinone derivative that inhibits the activity of acetylcholinesterase. It also binds to the muscarinic receptor and has been shown to have genotoxic activity in vitro. Methapyrilene hydrochloride has been shown to exert toxicity in vitro by inducing hepatocyte-like cells, nitrite ion production, and changes in iron homeostasis. Methapyrilene hydrochloride inhibits the enzyme activities of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and alkaline phosphatase, which are used for clinical diagnostic procedures. It also induces DNA damage in vitro, as observed through an increase in tail length of DNA fragments and a decrease in thymine content.
