Methotrexate is a drug substance that is used in the treatment of cancer and psoriasis. It is also used as a diagnostic agent to help identify the presence of chondroitin sulfate in body fluids. Methotrexate is a degradable, nonaromatic, biodegradable, gold nanoparticle-conjugated methotrexate dimethyl ester with reactive functional groups that can be activated by light or other means to cleave the linker. The reactive functional groups are then available for binding to affinity ligands such as chondroitin sulfate. Methotrexate has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by inhibiting DNA synthesis through its ability to bind to dsDNA at the 3'-hydroxyl group of ribose moieties.
