Description

3-Methoxy-4'-methylbenzophenone (3MMB) is an isomeric, penetrant synthetic antioxidant. 3MMB has been shown to be a potent antioxidant in several biological systems, including the skin. It can penetrate through the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin and inhibit lipid peroxidation. 3MMB also inhibits microbial growth and exhibits antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and yeast. 3MMB is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, chloroform, acetone, alcohols, ethers and ketones. Optical microscopy studies have shown that 3MMB forms homopolymers with molecular weights between 2000 and 10 000 Da. These polymers are thermotropic compounds which undergo a phase transition at about 100 °C from crystalline to amorphous form.
