2-Methoxyethyl 2-(3-nitrobenzylidene)acetoacetate is a condensation product of acetoacetate and isopropyl alcohol. It is a white crystalline solid at room temperature. This compound has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the synthesis of nimodipine, which is used as an antihypertensive drug. The optimum reaction conditions are between -10°C and 30°C. The reaction can also be carried out in the presence of light, but it will not work in the dark.
2-Methoxyethyl 2-(3-nitrobenzylidene)acetoacetate is synthesized from 3-nitrobenzaldehyde and cyclization with ethanol or toluene. The result of this reaction is a white crystalline solid that melts at 190°C, with a boiling point of 256°C at 0.1 mm Hg pressure.
