Product Information
- 1-(2-Piperidyl)ethanol2-(1'-Hydroxyethyl)piperidineMethyl(2-piperidyl)carbinol
a-Methyl-2-piperidinemethanol is an optical active compound that is used in the production of industrial chemicals. It is a chiral molecule and has two different forms, dextrorotatory and levorotatory. In order to produce enantiomerically pure compounds, it is necessary to use the dextrorotatory form. The synthesis of a-methyl-2-piperidinemethanol starts with the formation of aluminium hydride from aluminium and hydrogen gas. This reacts with sodium hypochlorite in an organic solvent to produce a mixture that contains the desired product, as well as some byproducts. A second reaction produces chromium trioxide which reacts with vinyl ether to produce the desired product.
