Methyldiiodoarsine is a fluorinated organic compound that has been used as an insecticide. It is mainly used in the production of polyurethane foams and for the treatment of head lice. Methyldiiodoarsine is metabolized to methyldiethanolamine, which reacts with hydrogen peroxide to form reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS are cytotoxic and can cause DNA damage and cell death. ROS are also formed when methyldiiodoarsine is metabolized in mammalian cells. The levels of methyldiiodoarsine found in urine samples have been shown to be correlated with the level of oxidative DNA damage. This correlation was observed both in human liver tissue and in cultured mammalian cells exposed to this chemical.
Methyldiiodoarsine can be detected using plasma mass spectrometry, which measures the amount of this chemical present by analyzing its molecular weight, charge, and fragmentation
