Product Information
- (4R)- 4-Methyl-L-glutamic Acid
- (2S,4R)-2-ammonio-4-methylpentanedioate
(2S,4R)-4-Methylglutamic acid is a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) analog that is structurally similar to the neurotransmitter GABA. This drug has been shown to inhibit neuronal death and cell death in vitro. It also inhibits the activity of glutamate receptors and prevents ATP release from nerve cells. (2S,4R)-4-Methylglutamic acid is a membrane-permeable drug that can be used for the treatment of epilepsy. It does not cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore does not cause any systemic side effects. (2S,4R)-4-Methylglutamic acid has also been found to have a specific agonist effect on mouse hippocampal neurons in vivo and can be used as an experimental tool for studying physiological functions of GABA receptors.
