3-Methyloxindole is a bacterial strain that has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis and cause cell death in a model system of mice. 3-Methyloxindole inhibits the growth of bacteria by affecting the metabolic profiles of the cells, which are determined by the reactive intermediates. This compound is metabolized in the human liver and lung tissue to form oxindole, which has been shown to be less toxic than 3-methyloxindole. The effects of 3-methyloxindole on plants are similar to those seen with acyl halides, such as acetyl chloride, and may be due to hydrogen bond formation between this molecule and plant proteins.
