Metrizoic acid is a synthetic, non-protein amino acid that is used in diagnostic tests to detect the presence of tumor cells in the body. Metrizoic acid binds to polymorphonuclear leucocytes and induces lysis, which can be quantified by measuring the rate of release of myeloperoxidase from these cells. This compound has been shown to have toxic effects on rat liver microsomes, as well as on various cell lines. It also inhibits the activity of enzymes such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and phosphodiesterase (PDE). Metrizoic acid is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and does not undergo metabolism in humans. It is excreted unchanged in urine and has an elimination half-life of about one hour. Metrizoic acid may be excreted by glomerular filtration or tubular secretion. Metrizoic acid has a plasma protein binding coefficient of 98%.
