2-Methoxypyridine-4-carboxaldehyde is a ligand that binds to histamine H2 receptors and blocks the binding of histamine to these receptors. This inhibits the release of gastric acid and helps treat peptic ulcers. 2-Methoxypyridine-4-carboxaldehyde also has a long duration of action due to its ability to form covalent bonds with proteins in the stomach lining. It is used as a lead compound for the development of new drugs for treating peptic ulcers and other conditions, such as asthma, bronchitis, and allergies. The affinity of 2-methoxypyridine-4-carboxaldehyde for histamine H2 receptors has been shown using quinolinyl moieties as fluorescent probes in fluorescence assay experiments on rat brain homogenates.
