It is an intermediate in the synthesis of many compounds, and has been used to synthesize anticancer drugs such as niclosamide. 2-Methylpyridine-4-carboxylic acid also has antimycobacterial activity against Cryptococcus neoformans and Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. This compound can be dehydrated to form 2-methylpyridine-3,5-dicarboxylic acid, which has been shown to have antifungal properties.
