Methsuximide is a drug that inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), which breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It is used to treat symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, such as confusion and agitation, and for disorders of the central nervous system such as Parkinson's disease. Methsuximide has been shown to be effective in patients with congestive heart failure who are taking drugs that increase serum levels of methsuximide, such as erythromycin or clarithromycin. Methsuximide also interacts with mianserin hydrochloride, an antidepressant.
Methsuximide may be useful for treating autoimmune diseases by blocking the production of certain inflammatory chemicals that are associated with these conditions.
