This compound is also a ligand for ribulose, which is a plant sugar. 7-Methylindole-3-carboxaldehyde is able to transport inhibitors into the endoplasmic reticulum and inhibit the transport of molecules through this organelle. It has antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis when used in combination with azide or other transport inhibitors such as chloroquine. This compound also has physiological functions in plants, including leaves and roots. 7-Methylindole-3-carboxaldehyde has been shown to be sensitive to light and heat, so it should be stored in dark places at low temperatures.
