Bis(4-methylbenzyl) oxalate is an inorganic acid that can be used as a catalyst for organic reactions. It is a strong sensitizer and can cause allergic contact dermatitis. Bis(4-methylbenzyl)oxalate is often used to make p-toluenesulfonic acid, stannous chloride, or chloroform. The bis(4-methylbenzyl)oxalate can be used as a transfer agent, electron donor, and chloride acceptor to facilitate the transfer of electrons from one molecule to another in organic reactions. This chemical has been found in wastewater effluent and is known to be efficient at removing benzene and other aromatic compounds from wastewater.
