Methyl 2-hydroxy-3-nitrobenzoate is a nitro compound that has been shown to inhibit the reaction system in which nitrous acid is formed by the reaction of nitric oxide with molecular oxygen. It can be used as a precursor for synthesizing other compounds, such as insecticides, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals. Methyl 2-hydroxy-3-nitrobenzoate reacts with carbon disulphide to produce nitrosamines, which are highly reactive with biomolecules and have toxic effects on cells. The inhibitory activity of methyl 2-hydroxy-3-nitrobenzoate towards the reaction system was enhanced when it was recycled.
