2-Methyl-L-proline is a reactive compound that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity. It is a buforin, which is an organolithium reagent that acts as a membrane permeabilizer. 2-Methyl-L-proline has been used in studies of the structure and reactivity of membrane bilayers. This compound has also been reported to be reactive with terminal alkynes and other compounds. At room temperature, it exists as a solid but at higher temperatures or when mixed with trifluoroacetic acid, it becomes a liquid. 2-Methyl-L-proline can also be prepared from the reaction of L-(+)-2-methylvaleric acid with potassium tert-butoxide in trifluoromethyl group containing solvents such as ethers and dichloromethane.
