7-MAC is a synthetic antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It has shown antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 7-MAC binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of the bacterial cell membrane and blocks the formation of peptide bonds in protein synthesis. The reaction time for this process is dependent on the concentration of acetic anhydride used in the reaction. 7-MAC has also been shown to be resistant to methicillin and other β-lactam antibiotics.
