1-Methylpiperidin-3-one is a synthetic compound and an inhibitor of the enzyme elongation factor 2. It has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of DNA and RNA in cell-free systems, but not in intact cells. 1-Methylpiperidin-3-one has also shown antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and Bacillus subtilis. The molecule's cancer therapeutic potential is currently being investigated in preclinical studies, which have demonstrated its ability to inhibit cancer cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo. 1-Methylpiperidin-3-one has been found to bind to a pharmacophore that overlaps with that for amines. This finding suggests that it may act as an amine reuptake inhibitor or as an antagonist at the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor on neurons.
