4-Methoxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone is a natural product that is found in the essential oil of the leaves and bark of several species of trees. It has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects and may be useful for the treatment of diabetes. This compound is extracted from plant tissues using solid phase microextraction (SPME) and analyzed by NMR spectroscopy. The chemical structure of 4-methoxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone has been determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). 4-Methoxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone has also been shown to inhibit the growth of some cancer cells in tissue culture models. In addition, it can be used as a model protein for methyl anthranilate, which is an intermediate in the reaction pathway that produces this compound.
