3-(5-Methyl-2-furyl)butanal is an aldehyde that has been shown to be a major metabolite of the antibiotic furanace. It is produced from furanone by oxidation through hydrogen peroxide and other reactive oxygen species. Furanones are part of the class of heterocycles, which are compounds containing rings with more than one type of atom. 3-(5-Methyl-2-furyl)butanal is also a homologous compound, which means it contains the same atoms but in different proportions. 3-(5-Methyl-2-furyl)butanal exhibits antibacterial activity against gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
