3-(Methylthio)propylamine is an inhibitor of the enzyme glycine N-acyltransferase (GAT), which catalyzes the reaction between glycine and acyl-CoA derivatives. This reaction is necessary for the synthesis of amino acids in plants and animals, and inhibition of this enzyme will lead to amino acid deficiency. 3-(Methylthio)propylamine was synthesized by asymmetric hydrogenation of the nitrosobenzene with a palladium catalyst. The nitrosobenzene used in this synthesis contains two nitrogen atoms that are not involved in forming the product. The asymmetric synthesis can be explained by intramolecular hydrogen transfer from one nitrogen atom to another, as shown in Figure 1. 3-(Methylthio)propylamine is transported into cells through passive diffusion and accumulates at high concentrations. Once inside cells, it inhibits GAT by binding to its active site and blocking access to glyc
