3-(Methylthio)propyl isothiocyanate (MTITC) is a potent inducer of protein synthesis. It has been shown to be an effective inducer of cycloheximide-sensitive and cycloheximide-resistant murine hepatoma cells, as well as liver cells in vitro. MTITC has also been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, such as prostate cancer cells. The mechanism by which MTITC induces protein synthesis may be due to its ability to activate detoxification enzymes, such as cytochrome P450 and glutathione S-transferase, which are important for the metabolism and elimination of toxic chemicals in the body.
MTITC has also been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, such as coliform bacteria. This may be due to its ability to induce detoxification enzymes in these bacteria that help protect them from antibiotic resistance.
