Description

4-(Methylthio)butanol is a solvent that is used in the matrix effect to extract sulfides from coal and oil shale. This organic solvent has been shown to be effective at high concentrations and low temperatures, which are key properties for this application. The spontaneous reactions of 4-(methylthio)butanol with sulfide may lead to the formation of unidentified products. 4-(Methylthio)butanol also has a strong effect on the volatility of sulfur-containing compounds, which can be exploited for headspace analysis and reaction monitoring.
