Description

Methyl n-propyl sulphide is a chemical compound that is used in the synthesis of polymers. It is produced by oxidation of methyl propyl sulphide with molybdenum trioxide. Methyl n-propyl sulphide has also been shown to have antioxidant properties and can inhibit the cationic polymerization of styrene monomers. This chemical reaction takes place in the presence of selenium compounds, which act as an inhibitor. The reaction mechanism for this process is not well understood and has been the subject of many investigations using chromatographic methods and mass spectrometric detection.
Methyl n-propyl sulphide has a number of industrial applications including use as an antioxidant for rubber, plastics, and paints; a desulfurizing agent for petroleum products; and an inhibitor for cationic polymerization reactions. It also reacts with other chemicals to form organic sulfur compounds that are used in agriculture as fungicides and pesticides.
