Description

2-Mercapto-3-butanol (MB) is a chemical substance that is used as a medicine. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of lenticular cataracts in vitro. MB inhibits the production of phenolic acid, which is an intermediate in the biosynthesis pathway of the lens. MB also inhibits the formation of reactive oxygen species by radiation and butyric acid, which are products of lipid peroxidation. MB has been shown to have a linear response in vitro and can be used as an efficient method for inhibiting cataract formation.
