It is used in coatings and as a monomer for other compounds. 2-Methylcrotonic anhydride reacts with acids to form a coagulation agent, which can be used in medicine. This compound has been shown to modulate platelet activation and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication. 2-Methylcrotonic anhydride also has the ability to introduce carboxylate groups onto proteins, which may play a role in protein synthesis or enzymatic activity.
2-methylcrotonic anhydride is not likely to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic.
