2-(Methylthio)thiophene is a compound that is used as a reactant in organic synthesis. It is also a component of wastewater and can be oxidized to form 2-methylthiophene-3-sulfonic acid (3MS). 3MS can then be cleaved by hydrogen peroxide to form acetaldehyde, which can be further oxidized to form acetic acid. This reaction is an efficient method for the treatment of wastewater with high levels of organic acids, such as chloride. The formation of hydrogen bonds between 3MS and chloride ions facilitates this process.
2-(Methylthio)thiophene has been shown to break down at rates that are faster than other compounds with similar structures, such as methyl benzoate or ethyl diazoacetate.
