Methyl p-tolyl sulfide (MPTS) is a sulfoxide with redox potentials that are typical of group P2. It is an experimental model for studying the reactions of sulfoxides and their derivatives, including the transfer reactions of sulfoxides. MPTS has been shown to inhibit transcription-polymerase chain reaction and protein synthesis in bacteria by reacting with dinucleotide phosphate. This chemical has also been used as a wastewater treatment agent in some cases.
