Monochlorobimane is a reactive chemical that can cause oxidative injury in biological samples. Monochlorobimane inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential and causes neuronal death in human leukemia HL-60 cells. It also inhibits the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by preventing DNA synthesis, which may be due to its ability to induce glutathione depletion. The effects of monochlorobimane on cellular function are dependent on the concentration of the chemical. At low concentrations, monochlorobimane increases the rate of mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP production through glutathione-dependent reactions. However, at high concentrations, monochlorobimane has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP production through glutathione-independent reactions. Monochlorobimane has been shown to have antibacterial properties against infectious diseases such as malaria, AIDS, herpes simplex virus type 2, and influenza virus type A2 in model systems.
