Mercaptoacetic acid ammonium salt (MAAS) is a chemical compound that is used as an oxidation catalyst in organic reactions. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of congestive heart failure, and has also been tested for its potential to inhibit the growth of human cancer cells. MAAS inhibits the reaction of thioglycolate with potassium dichromate to form hydrogen peroxide, which may have therapeutic effects. MAAS has also been shown to act as an antimicrobial agent by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi, including Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. The mechanism of action for MAAS is not known. MAAS binds covalently to redox-active cysteine residues on proteins such as proteases and peptidases and prevents their activity.
