Mercaptoacetic acid calcium salt (MACA) is a conjugate that combines the therapeutic benefits of mercaptoacetic acid with the protective effects of calcium. It has been used to treat inflammatory disorders and has been shown to inhibit the production of interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R), which is a ligand for IL-1. Mercaptoacetic acid calcium salt also inhibits the activity of necrosis factor, which is involved in inflammation, by binding to its polyene receptor. Mercaptoacetic acid calcium salt is degraded by enzymes into mercapturic acid and acetic acid, which are non-toxic substances.
