Description:

4-Methylmandelic acid is an organic compound that is catalysed by hydration. The formation constants of 4-methyl mandelic acid in acid solutions are dependent on the concentration of the solution. The rate of reaction was found to be dependent on the pH and the concentrations of reactants. 4-Methyl mandelic acid has been used to synthesize acrylonitrile, which can then be used as a precursor for acrylic fibers, plastics and other materials. It has also been used in the synthesis of quinolinium, a reactive intermediate that can be converted into drugs such as atropine and hyoscyamine. 4-Methyl mandelic acid is metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzymes with hydrogen ions, forming methylmalonic acid.
