5-Mercaptotetrazole-1-acetic acid is a hydrophilic compound that binds to the active site of bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme that maintains the integrity of bacterial DNA. 5-Mercaptotetrazole-1-acetic acid contains two nitrogen atoms and interacts with the metal ions in the active site of DNA gyrase. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. The stability of this molecule is due to its crosslinking by carboxylate ligands, which provide stabilization. In addition, 5-mercaptotetrazole-1-acetic acid is reversible and can be used as a ligand for other molecules.
