3-Methylbenzyl isocyanate is a ligand that binds to metal ions. It can be used in asymmetric synthesis and as a chiral building block for the construction of chiral metallacycles. 3-Methylbenzyl isocyanate has been shown to react with phosphines, forming five-membered cyclic phosphine complexes, which are catalysts for the enantioselective addition of organometallic reagents. 3-Methylbenzyl isocyanate also reacts with carbenes and tetramers to form six-, seven-, or eight-membered rings.
3-Methylbenzyl isocyanate has been shown to have strong antibacterial activity against gram positive bacteria, such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Clostridium perfringens, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
