Methyl (S)-3-amino-3-phenylpropanoate is an enantiopure chiral compound with the molecular formula CHNO. It is a white solid that can be obtained through an enantioselective synthesis by reacting (R)-(+)-α-methylbenzylamine with methyl 3-hydroxybutyrate in the presence of zinc chloride and triethylamine. The compound has been used to synthesize Taxol, a drug that inhibits cell proliferation, which is used as treatment for cancer and Paget’s disease. Methyl (S)-3-amino-3-phenylpropanoate can also be used to synthesize stereoisomers of taxols.
