Methyl phenoxyacetate is an activated, synthetic compound that is used as a chemical intermediate. It is also used in the synthesis of pyridoxine hydrochloride and gamma-aminobutyric acid. Methyl phenoxyacetate has been shown to be useful in the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. One study has shown that methyl phenoxyacetate may inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells by inhibiting the activity of proton pumps in tumor cells, which leads to a decrease in intracellular pH and increased cytotoxicity. This process also inhibits the production of inflammatory molecules such as prostaglandin E2 by blocking cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity. The chemical formula for methyl phenoxyacetate is C9H10O2 with a molecular weight of 154.17 g/mol.
