Methyl 2-amino-3,5-dibromobenzoate is a synthetic antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting their ability to synthesize proteins. It is chemically similar to methyl anthranilate and binds to the same site as an amino acid in the bacterial ribosome. The synthesis of this compound starts with the reaction of potassium borohydride with 3,5-dibromobenzaldehyde, followed by the condensation reaction with an amine (2-aminoanthranilic acid) and hydrochloric acid. The product yield can be increased by using escherichia coli or ligands that bind to the substrate. Methyl 2-amino-3,5-dibromobenzoate has been shown to inhibit staphylococcus and other bacteria in vitro. It has also been found in natural products such as honey and wine.
