Description:

3-Hydroxy-alpha-methyl-DL-tyrosine (3HMT) is a prodrug of the active compound 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid, which is a metabolic product of tyrosine. It is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease and has been shown to have beneficial effects in patients with high blood pressure. 3HMT can be converted into 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid by intestinal bacteria, which has been shown to bind to nitrogen atoms in human serum proteins and platelets. This binding inhibits the formation of reactive oxygen species that are generated by activated neutrophils during inflammation, resulting in antiinflammatory activities. The pharmacokinetics of 3HMT have been evaluated using human serum and urinary excretion data collected after a single oral dose of 500 mg or intravenous infusion at 10 mg/kg body weight. Pharmacological agents such as cardiac glycosides and diuretics also increase renal glomerular filtration rate by inhibiting Na
